GFS believes that celebrating families and traditions is an important way of empowering the families we serve. Therefore we encourage residents to organization Community Celebrations that are important to them. For example, groups have organized birthday parties and traditional holiday celebrations such as Día de los Muertos and Christmas parties.

Additionally, each year GFS holds an annual community outreach event, Let's Read! / ¡Vamos a Leer! , designed to promote community awareness of the importance of early literacy and parent involvement. Each year the event reaches 150-200 East San José parents and their children ages three to eight. During the event, families participate in literacy activities and are given free books to take home so that they can continue to enjoy reading and strengthen their literacy skills.

"It is very important for me that my children know about the traditions of my home country."
- Leticia, Community Celebration organizer and participant

"Coming to the [Let's Read! / ¡Vamos a Leer!] event taught me how important it is to read to my [infant] daughter. We read to her regularly using the only three books we own, which are the ones we got at the event."
- Veronica, Let's Read! / Vamos a Leer! participant
