This year, GFS launched the Summer Literacy and Enrichment Program in response to a critical challenge affecting the Mayfair community. According to the California Standardized Testing Report, a high percentage of children attending schools in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District in East San José are reading below their grade level. The program, which takes in first, second, and third graders, was developed to boost reading skills. It also provides parents an affordable alternative to sending their children to daycare facilities.
The program runs for 8 weeks, Monday thru Friday beginning June 22, 2009. Parents have the option of signing their child up for a half day program, or a full day program. The half day program starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 3:00 PM, while the full day program lasts until 5:00 PM.
Each week children participate in reading, arts and crafts, and social activities designed to enhance their knowledge. On Fridays, the Child Enrichment Staff organizes field trips to local educational sites such as the Children’s Discovery Museum.
