"I'm glad my daughter will participate in this program because it pushes me as a parent to do the things with her that I know I am supposed to do, but don't always find time for." - Elizabeth, Parent of a 1st grader BEST Program participant

The Children's BEST for Achievement Program is an after school literacy program with a strong parent involvement component for 1st - 3rd grade students who are scoring between the 30th and 60th percentile on standardized tests for literacy. These children do not qualify for other school intervention programs but are not performing up to grade level.

The program uses a structured curriculum developed by GFS. A child's literacy skills , his/her interest in reading , and parental participation in their child's literacy activities are assessed using pre-test and post-test evaluation instruments. Evaluation results demonstrate that children increase their reading fluency, their listening and reading comprehension, and their interest in reading while participating in the BEST Program.

The goals of the program are:

* To improve children's basic literacy skills
* To increase children's motivation for reading
* To increase children's self-esteem
* To increase parents' participation in their children literacy education
