The Challenge : According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Mayfair community (the primary community that Grail serves): → 75.6% of the surrounding school district’s (the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District) second to fifth graders are not reading at grade level proficiency as determined by the state → 25% of the neighborhood’s population lives below the poverty line → It is designated as a child poverty zone by the Santa Clara County.

Our Solutions: GFS runs over 15 programs geared to helping patrons increasing literacy, language, and parenting skills. Through evaluation studies, our programs have produced sound results in all three of these areas. Highlights of Grail Family Services' proven Results* : → 1st-3rd grade children’s participating in GFS’s After School Literacy Program did 24% better on school standardized tests for literacy than their classmates who did not participate in the program → 60% of 3- to 5-year-olds in GFS’s Early Literacy Program, Tyke Tales, increased their knowledge of print concepts → Parents in GFS’s literacy programs report spending nearly double the amount of time each week reading to their children → 83% of parents increased their support of their children’s learning experiences (e.g took a more active role in their' children's schooling activities) |
*GFS has conducted research-based evaluations that empirically measure the impact of its services. Results of some of its evaluations include increased listening and reading comprehensions skills among children and increased parents’ ability to support their children’s learning experiences.
